No town does Noire better than Los Angeles – but imagine having a bride and groom with the last name Dahlia! The possibilities limitless! Jodie and James chose The Castaway Restaurant in Burbank for both their ceremony and reception which has some great photo spots, but nothing that could do this fun and creative couple justice! Since neither were natives to the area, it was up to me to find the perfect locations to do their day justice. Half a day of scouting two weeks beforehand and I came up with the perfect plan! Wouldn’t you agree……

Hot August Night

Saturday’s wedding was not for the week of heart… 3:30pm and temps still hovering in the low 100′s! But the scorching daytime temps led us into a stunning night, made only happier by this old-fashioned Ferris wheel. I see a lot of love in my line of work but every so often I have the grand honor of working with a couple who harbor deep gratitude for the love they found. Rob and Tim both felt the luckiest men alive, genuinely and tangibly. These guys undoubtedly will grow old and gray together. Congrats boys, you give love a good name!

NEW APPROACH TO LIFE

It’s been quite the year – we have been building a house since May 2010 and 2011 is shaping up to be our busiest wedding photography year ever! The downside of all this great news, is the marginal time left for fun. Instead of keeping you all up-to-date here in blogville, I’ve shunned my posting responsibilities to focus on my clients and my house. With that mea culpa behind me, I’m going to carve out ten more seconds per week and keep my images fresh and updated, here and now!

Last weekend I photographed my first Latter Day Saints celebration, which proved no vices needed for a joyful celebration. Michelle and Jerry met through their church, despite living in separate countries! Once they return from their Wizarding World honeymoon in Orlando, it’s off to Edmonton, the cooler regions of Canada they go!

Just returned from one of my best WPPI visits to date (Wedding and Portrait Photographers Int’l). It wasn’t great in the typical Vegas fashion – winning big or drinking heavily (neither of which describe my favorite pastimes) but rather a fantastic amount of time spent with the coolest group of Los Angeles based wedding photographers. In the big ugly world I guess you could sum these folks up as my competition but in my world and heart, they were great new friends (some existing), talented artists, intelligent company and kindred spirits. We ate, some drank, definitely dissed those deserving but best of all, we laughed hard and often. While chat regarding work was minimal, what little we discussed enlightened.

The female population of this group (as husbands/business partners were part of the fun) have banded together as WTF (Women Taking Fotos). From here on out we will proudly don our tiny pins and keep future generations of WPPI attendees wondering…… WTF???

I’m finally back for 2011! I took a much-needed break from blogging here, so I could blog about the house we’re building! I also have not shot too much between last Fall and now, but it’s heating up again and there is lots to come! When I’m not shopping for door handles, flooring and paint colors, I’ll be shooting, editing and posting my brains off!

Today kicked off my first of many weddings and special events for 2011 and no better place than in the 90210 zip code…. Beverly Hills! The day started a bit rough as the groom asked me to meet them at the Four Seasons Beverly Hills…. until today I only ever knew of the Beverly Wilshire Four Season’s – luckily I’m chronically early, as there is another Four Seasons on the West Hollywood/Beverly Hills border. In ten minutes I arrived at the “other” Four Seasons, with plenty of time to photograph Evelyn’s hair and makeup transformation.

I was then treated to a very new experience in my nearly 20 years of wedding photography – an actual courthouse wedding. Well, not quite my first, but my first in the United States. For a courthouse, these security guards were exceptionally cheerful – seems seeing pretty brides parade through their metal detectors is a job perk they embrace. I on the other hand lost any enthusiasm for the metal detectors as there were events transpiring both within and outside the courthouse lobby. I toggled between the two locations, and each entry into the courthouse required another run through the “system”. Same guards, same camera gear, same rigamarole.

The ceremony was short and sweet, less than five minutes at best. The justice of the peace jovial and succinct. The bride and groom equally as married as any other couple wed at any other location. Later in the evening we convened at Il Cielo on Burton Way. White lights strung like stars in the midnight sky transformed the separate dining room into a wonderland of magic. Tall candelabras and wall sconces gave my lens the focusing aid needed to capture the tungsten glow of the evening.

GEORGIA ON MY MIND

In the early 90′s I dated a great guy for nearly six years. In that time, I grew to know his family in Georgia (and New Hampshire!) I attended baptisms, numerous Christmases, a few Thanksgivings and one big family trip to Disney World Orlando. Along the way, his nieces and nephews fell victim to my Nikon – and it’s my Nikon which brought me back to Georgia this past weekend.

Sarah, who was all of three the last time I saw her is a senior in high school. Thanks to the ever wonderous Facebook, her mom and I got back in touch about a year ago. Sometime this past summer, her mom mentioned that I had taken Sarah’s all time favorite image on our 1996 trip to Disney World and “wouldn’t it be nice if you lived close enough to take Sarah’s senior portraits.” It’s amazing how a single, small comment can grow into a fantastic weekend. Just so happened, I had a trip planned to Florida – I threw the notion out there and next thing I know, I’m reunited in Georgia with friends I have not seen in 14 years. It felt like four months tops had transpired, except three-year old Sarah was now 17 and taller than me. As was her brother, all of five last time I saw him, now a sophomore in college and able to hoist me off the ground with a big bear hug.

The reunion alone filled my heart to capacity but adding to the magic, our photo shoot took place at Glennridge Hall, a 1920′s historical home still privately owned by it’s twenty-something heiress, easily one of the nicest and most grounded women I’ve met. GLIMMER OF HOPE

Even my internal optimist thinks aging sucks. Every day something else sags, wrinkles, wobbles and aches. It’s hard to keep your spirits up and mind set positive in the midst of the perfect gravity storm. Today however, the most amazing women provided me the honor of taking her boudoir photographs – 54 years old and hot in all the right places! Not just her body, but her mind, spirit and soul had it all going. While she has lived a bit longer than me, those approaching years just got a whole lot friendlier – bring it on!
